Attentional Challenges

CHADD, an acronym for Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, is an organization committed to providing education about ADHD and advocacy and support for individuals struggling with it. A similar organization with a helpful website and article library is ADDA (Attention Deficit Disorder Association). Also check out the ADDitude magazine.

Dyslexia, Reading & Writing Challenges

The Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity co-founded and directed by physicians and neuroscientific researchers, Dr. Sally E. Shaywitz and Dr. Bennett A. Shaywitz, is an excellent resource to learn about research on dyslexia and interventions. It also offers helpful parent information. Additional reliable resources include the International Dyslexia Association, Reading Rockets, and Understood.

Executive Function Challenges

Harvard University’s Center on the Developing Child has a thorough explanation of executive function as do CHADD, Understood, and ADDitude. This ADDitude article also gives brief info on diagnosing executive function disorder (EFD) and treatments.


Social & Emotional Challenges

The Child Mind Institute explains why children with learning challenges struggle socially. They also offer tips on how to help kids manage anxiety. InfoAboutKids.org, a resource from the American Psychological Association has an “Information for Parents and Caregivers” section under their Emotions tab. The APA also has “Resilience Guide for Parents and Teachers” on their Help Center page.
